About the Area
Wrightsville Beach
Wrightsville Beach is the ultimate family vacation destination in Southeastern North Carolina. The most accessible beach community from I-40, makes Wrightsville Beach easy to reach, and easier to stay! Five miles of wide, sandy beach offers visitors the opportunity to experience the natural beauty of our coastline. Lush marshes teem with wildlife. Majestic egrets and blue herons nestle among their protective grasses. Shellfish abound. Meandering sounds and inlets border the island to the north, south, and west - the mighty Atlantic to the east.
Since the turn of the century, Wrightsville Beach has attracted guests from all over the southeast. In the early days, many Wilmingtonians seeking relief from the heat and hubbub of daily life sought refuge in their cottages cooled by gentle ocean breezes. An hour's train and trolley ride brought renewal and comfort. Grand hotels graced the strand offering a variety of entertainment and just plain fun.
Today Wrightsville Beach is a small town, gently blending the old with the new. Modern condos and homes are interspersed with updated older homes with inviting wraparound porches. The big hotels are gone. The trolley and train have been replaced with a four-lane drawbridge and causeway. Downtown remains simple. Intimate restaurants, an old fashioned grocery, boutiques, ice cream and hotdog stands are an easy stroll from central island.
Wilmington, the cultural and commercial center of southeastern North Carolina is only a 20 minute drive. Shopping malls, theaters, challenging golf courses, a water park, ice skating rink, and the historic district are just a few of the many things to do.

Carolina/ Kure Beach
Carolina Beach is THE cool spot for a family vacation. There’s lots to do for kids of all ages. Cross Snow Cut’s Bridge to Carolina Beach and enjoy the sun, surf, and fun. Located at the southern tip of New Hanover County, Carolina/Kure Beach share seven miles of pristine coastline, as well as the legendary Cape Fear River to the west. Herons, pelicans, egrets, and other wildlife take delight in the protected habitats along its marshy shores.
Since the turn of the century, Wilmingtonians, hoping to escape the summer's heat embarked on steam-driven river boats for a delightful day-cruise down the Cape Fear to Carolina Beach. There, visitors boarded a small train that took them to grand ocean front pavilions. Picnics, frolicking in the surf, and games were enjoyed until it was time to catch the steamer back to the city.
Today, although the river boats are gone, Carolina Beach still is a destination for family fun. Hiking nature trails in the state park, fishing from the shore, piers, or charter boats, strolling the boardwalk with its shops, restaurants, and arcades, paddle boats, and miniature golf are just a sampling of things to do.
For guests seeking a quiet getaway, Kure Beach to the south is the ideal place to stay where waves gently slapping the shore and the cawing of birds are the only sounds you'll hear. Kure Beach is one of the best kept secrets for a quiet vacation in Southeastern North Carolina. Folks who have been visiting Kure Beach for years would prefer to keep it that way. Visit the quaint downtown for an ice-cream cone and a walk on the pier. Historic Ft. Fisher and the NC Aquarium are just down the road. For a special treat, take the Ft. Fisher Ferry across the Cape Fear River to Southport and spend a few hours enjoying its shops and riverfront.
